What works tonight, and what doesn’t yet.

The basics, done on your hardware. Every line says where it stands.

Your libraries

Folder scanning
New files are picked up on their own; network shares are rescanned every 15 minutes. PLAID only reads your folders.
Available
Matching and artwork
Titles, posters and synopses from TMDB and fanart.tv, in each library’s language. Your own .nfo files and images come first.
Available
Search and collections
Find a film, a show or a person. Browse collections.
Available
PLAID’s first-run scan: Scanning your libraries, done, the woven progress bar full.
First run, step 3 of 4. The progress bar is woven like the player’s timeline.

Playback

Direct Play
When a device can play the file as it is, PLAID sends it untouched. Almost no CPU.
Available
Direct Stream and transcoding
When it can’t, PLAID remuxes or re-encodes to H.264 with FFmpeg, at a quality that fits the connection.
Available
Hardware transcoding
VAAPI, Intel Quick Sync, NVENC or V4L2 M2M, tested at startup, with software as the fallback. What works where.
Available
Subtitles
Text and image subtitles, with each profile’s audio and subtitle choices remembered.
Available
Continue watching
Stop on the TV, pick up in the browser. Each profile keeps its place.
Available

Screens

Web
Served by the server itself, in any recent browser.
Available
Apple TV
A native tvOS app. It finds the server on the network and pairs with a code.
Available
iPhone and iPad
Next in the Apple phase, in SwiftUI like the TV app.
Planned
Android and Android TV
Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, after the Apple apps.
Planned

People

Accounts and profiles
An admin, members, and a profile per person, with an optional PIN.
Available
TV pairing
A TV signs in with a short code typed on another device.
Available
Remote access
A getplaid.direct address and a real certificate for your server. How it works.
Available
Library sharing
Invite a friend by link to one library or collection, with a quality cap and instant revocation.
Planned
Plaid Party
Watch together, in sync. The concept.
Planned

Labels

What the labels mean

Available: merged and in the releases, still being polished. Planned: written as an intent, not built. Later: on the list, not designed yet.
